  • Summer 2025

Canion Hempel is a graduate student at the Bush School of Government and Public Service at Texas A&M University. He is pursuing a Master’s degree in International Affairs with a focus on international development and democratization. Canion graduated summa cum laude from Texas A&M University in 2023 with a Bachelor’s degree in International Studies and a minor in Spanish.

His main interests include democratization, human rights, and international development. He has visited over 50 countries—including Turkmenistan, Cuba, and Azerbaijan—which has given him a real-world understanding of the issues that interest him. As a research intern at HRNK, he hopes to deepen his knowledge of human rights abuses in North Korea and aims to compare them with the abuses he has studied and observed in other authoritarian regimes.
