North Korean Human Rights and Denuclearization

The college's Ruth K. and Shepard Broad International Lecture Series, in cooperation with the Center for Global Engagement (CGE) and the Korean Economic Institute of America (KEIA), presents a panel discussion, “Out of Order? Approaching North Korean Human Rights and Denuclearization.”

The event will feature:
Roberta Cohen, Nonresident Senior Fellow in the Foreign Policy Program at the Brookings Institution
Keith Luse, Executive Director of the National Committee on North Korea
David Maxwell, Associate Director of the Center for Security Studies at Georgetown University

The panel will be moderated by Kyle Ferrier, KEIA’s Director of Academic Affairs and Research.

According to United States policy, nothing can be done about North Korea until the nuclear issue is resolved, but the rogue country’s fourth nuclear test in January casts doubt on whether denuclearization is a possible first step. Meanwhile, the U.N. Commission of Inquiry on Human Rights in North Korea has highlighted numerous human rights abuses that are tied to the ruling Kim family. Can the U.S. move forward on the nuclear issue and human rights? Should one take priority over the other? Is there room for compromise? This panel of experts will bring a range of perspectives on current U.S. policy and offer suggestions on how to balance these two major issues moving forward.

The event, which is free and open to the public, is being presented as part of CGE’s ongoing Engage Your World Intercultural Dialogue Series. The program meets the requirements for the student Global Citizenship Certificate.
