Joseph Kim was orphaned during the great famine of the 1990s in North Korea, which killed more than a million people, including his father. His mother and sister fled to China in search of food and work despite the risk of being jailed, sold into slavery, or shot on sight; he never saw them again. In 2006, Joseph escaped to China, ultimately finding his way to one of the modern-day “underground railroads,” where a network of activists guided him to refuge in the United States.

Today, while attending college in New York City, he remains a leading voice calling for change to the wide-scale suffering in North Korea. He has worked closely with Liberty in North Korea (LiNK), has appeared in numerous documentaries, and has shared the plight of North Koreans to audiences in the U.S., South Korea, and abroad. His TED Talk has earned over a million views. He was a featured guest for the annual Human Rights Day at U.S. State Department's Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights, and Labor in 2014 and spoke at the United Nations in April 2015 as part of a U.S. sponsored event.

He wrote his memoir, Under the Same Sky: From Starvation in North Korea to Salvation in America, to educate policymakers and advocates about the human rights situation in North Korea.
