2016 Korean Film Festival

The “2016 Korean Film Festival” hosted by the Consulate General of the Republic of Korea in Toronto in partnership with The Korea Foundation will be held June 24th-25th, 2016 at the TIFF Bell Light Box Cinema 3. This year's Festival presents four renowned films: 

June 24th (Friday)       19:00   Opening Ceremony

June 25th (Saturday)  13:30   Le Grand Chef
                                         16:30   Hwang Jin Yi
                                         19:30   Secret Reunion

Tickets for the general public are available on a first come, first served basis. 

 

<국가대표 / Take Off>

June 24th 7:30pm  â€– Running Time: 137mins  â€– Genre: Drama, Comedy

Cha Heon-tae, a Korean-born American, was adopted with his sister to American parents. He appears on a Korean television program in search of his mother. Since Heon-tae is a trained alpine skier, he is approached by Coach Bang who wants to recruit members for a new national ski jumping team for the approaching 1998 Winter Olympics. The other members are Choi Hong-cheol, a night club waiter; Ma Jae-bok, who works at a meat restaurant and Kang Chil-gu, who lives with his grandmother and autistic brother Bong-gu. To gear up for the qualifying match at the World Cup, they overcome their fear and train in unusual places, such as from the top of cars, amusement park roller coasters, etc. Unfortunately, because of deep fog, Chil-gu injures his leg and becomes unable to compete. Bong-gu decides to jump as a substitute but does not make the required distance for a gold medal and nearly loses his life. Despite their loss, the athletes rejoice because Bong-gu survived the jump, and the Koreans back home are proud of them.

A young, incredibly talented chef quits the profession after a contest to head a world-class restaurant ends in tragedy. Retiring to a small rural town with his grandfather, he finds a new and more peaceful existence, working as a farmer and selling vegetables at the local market. Even though content in his new life, when a nationwide cooking competition offers him the chance to take on his long-time rival, Seong-Chan embarks on a journey that will forever change his view of the world and lead him to the most startling revelations. Surrounding himself with a ragtag crew of misfits, each with his own poignant story to tell, he is soon in the media spotlight, facing stiff competition from the other contestants while dealing with his grandfather's diminishing faculties and a long buried family secret. Seong-Chan can only struggle to overcome every adversity with a quiet dignity.

 

<황진이 / Hwang Jin Yi>

HWANG Jin-yi was one of the most legendary women in the 500-year reign of the Joseon Dynasty. Born into nobility, she made the startling choice to become a gisaeng at age 15. By 18, she was the object of desire of all men and the envy of all women. As both a poet and a courtesan, HWANG Jin-yi was a woman ahead of her time, her work and life with gusto, Her only love, however, was a man nobody ever knew. The man she chose was compelled to abandon his identity and cross class lines. A revolutionary who dreamed of a new world, HWANG Jin-yi became a heroine for the people. In an age where one's fate was determined by birth, her commitment to her love never wavered.

June 25th 7:30pm  â€– Running Time: 116mins  â€– Genre: Drama, Action

A North Korean killer known as “Shadow” is sent to assassinate an important dissident who found refuge in Seoul. He is helped by two agents: Son Tae-soon as look-out, and Song Ji-won, an elite fighter. The North Koreans have not counted with Lee Han-gyoo, from the South Korean National Intelligence Service, who has been tracking them and closes in with his men. Han-gyoo has not counted with the North Koreans' skill and ruthlessness. True to his reputation, “Shadow” disappears. Ji-won manages to escape, but cannot return to his country, where he is suspected to be a traitor, nor defect, for this means certain death for his wife and daughter who remained in North Korea. Discredited, Han-gyoo is fired from the NIS. Several years later, Ji-won and Han-gyoo meet unexpectedly, and pick up their confrontation, but not quite from where they left it off.
