SUMMARY:The North Korea You've Never Seen
DESCRIPTION:Eyewitness Report: The North Korea you've never seen Join the ANSWER Coalition for a special eyewitness report featuring Gloria La Riva: The world's most isolated country has been greatly misunderstood by the outside world due to a U.S.-led demonization campaign\, military threats\, and sanctions. This isolation has prevented normal relations despite most Koreans wanting reunification of the Korean Peninsula. Gloria La Riva traveled to North Korea and will provide an unprecedented view into life in the cities and countryside\, the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) where the Cold War continues\, and how the Democratic People's Republic of Korea has taken a unique path toward building socialism.   Gloria La Riva is a lifelong activist and organizer with the ANSWER Coalition and the Party for Socialism and Liberation. She visited North Korea in 1989 and 2015. For more information email Sac@ANSWERcoalition.org or call (916) 572-9680

SUMMARY:Film Screening: "People are the Sky"
DESCRIPTION:People are the Sky\n \nDAI SIL KIM-GIBSON  USA\, 2015  94 minutes\, Color \nIn Person: Director Dai Sil Kim-Gibson \nDirector Dai Sil Kim-Gibson is the first Korean-American filmmaker to receive official permission from the North Korean government to film inside the country's borders. The result is unprecedented—and sometimes startling—as Kim-Gibson focuses on the hurts and desires\, beauty and contradiction\, and pride and aspirations of the long-held\, demonized nation. She seamlessly weaves her own personal story as a native-born North Korean with the fractious history of the North-South division and pinpoints the roots of North Korean's hatred of the United States. A mix of interviews\, epic images\, and graceful musings\, People Are the Sky refers to the ordinary people the director meets along the way and the ultimate meaning of her pilgrimage.—Korean American Film Festival New York

Most recently\, innovative and effective sanctions have addressed Iran’s nuclear program and Russia’s aggression in Ukraine\, demonstrating the importance of coercive economic measures to U.S. foreign policy. But as sanctions have become a key piece of the U.S. strategy abroad\, policymakers and thought leaders have raised questions about the role\, effectiveness\, and centrality of sanctions in U.S. policy. \nThis CNAS public conference on U.S. sanctions and national security\, co-hosted with the Center on Law and Security at NYU School of Law\, will feature an overview of administration policy on sanctions and a discussion among distinguished former policy leaders on the role for coercive economic measures in tackling the security challenges of the future. The event coincides with the release of a CNAS report on the effects and effectiveness of sanctions since 9/11. Some questions this conference will explore include: how can the United States measure and achieve intended effects from the use of coercive economic measures? What place should sanctions have in the U.S. national security arsenal? And as American rivals become more familiar with the tools of economic statecraft\, what defensive measures are available to protect U.S. interests from retaliation for the imposition of sanctions?

SUMMARY:Present Pasts: The Politics of Memory in East Asia - The Fourth Annual Nancy Bernkopf Tucker Memorial Lecture
DESCRIPTION:Present Pasts: The Politics of Memory in East Asia \nThe seventieth anniversary of the end of World War II last year brought another round of contentious memory politics in East Asia.  Despite the seeming sameness of the debates\, in fact the practices and norms of public memory have substantially altered since the end of the war\, creating what speaker Carol Gluck calls a “global memory culture.” Changes in the law\, politics\, society\, criteria of knowledge\, and concepts of responsibility have transformed our understanding of what it means to do justice to the past.  How then do these changes relate to the politics of memory in East Asia today? \n \n\n\nSpeakers\n\n\nCarol Gluck\n George Sansom Professor of History at Columbia University\n\n \n– See more at: https://www.wilsoncenter.org/event/the-fourth-annual-nancy-bernkopf-tucker-memorial-lecture#sthash.J3U9tuCk.dpuf
