SUMMARY:Book Talk: The Invitation-Only Zone: The True Story of North Korea's Abduction Project
DESCRIPTION:Lecture: Center for Korean Studies: Institute of East Asian Studies \nSpeaker/Performer: Robert S. Boynton\, New York University \nSponsors: Institute of East Asian Studies (IEAS)\, Center for Korean Studies (CKS)\, Graduate School of Journalism \n  \nFor decades\, North Korea denied any part in the disappearance of dozens of Japanese citizens from Japan's coastal towns and cities in the late 1970s.  But in 2002\, with his country on the brink of collapse\, Kim Jong-il admitted to the kidnapping of thirteen people and returned five of them in hopes of receiving Japanese aid.  As part of a global espionage project\, the regime had attempted to reeducate these abductees and make them spy on its behalf.  When the scheme faltered\, the captives were forced to teach Japanese to North Korean spies and make lives for themselves\, marrying\, having children\, and posing as North Korean civilians in guarded communities known as “Invitation-Only Zones”- the fiction being that they were exclusive enclaves\, not prisons.   \nFrom the moment Robert S. Boynton saw a photograph of these men and women\, he became obsessed with their story.  Torn from their homes as young adults\, living for a quarter century in a strange and hostile country\, they were returned with little more than an apology from the secretive regime.   \nIn The Invitation-Only Zone\, Boynton untangles the bizarre logic behind the abductions.  Drawing on extensive interviews with the abductees\, Boynton reconstructs the story of their lives inside North Korea and ponders the existential toll the episode has had on them\, and on Japan itself.  He speaks with nationalists\, spies\, defectors\, diplomats\, abductees\, and even crab fisherman\, exploring the cultural and racial tensions between Korea and Japan that have festered for more than a century.   \nA deeply reported\, thoroughly researched book\, The Intivation-Only Zone is a riveting story of East Asian politics and of the tragic human consequences of North Korea's zealous attempt to remain relevant in the modern world. \n  \nEvent Contact: cksassist@berkeley.edu\, 510-643-9787 \n  \n

SUMMARY:Conference Slaves to the System: North Korean Forced Labour in the EU
DESCRIPTION:LeidenAsiaCentre kindly invites you to attend an afternoon conference on the occasion of the publication of the first research report by the Slaves to the System research group: North Korean Forced Labour in the EU\, the Polish Case: How the Supply for a Captive DPRK Workforce Meets Our Demand for Cheap Labour. \n \nWanneer\n6 Jul 2016 \n| \n14:00 – 17:00 \nWaar\nKlein Auditorium\, Academy Building\, Rapenburg 73\, Leiden \n \n\nIn 2014\, a 42-year old welder died a horrible death after having lived through 2 years of a slave-like existence as a forced worker. The welder was from North Korea (Democratic People’s Republic of Korea\, or DPRK). He worked and died in the EU. Researching this tragic death\, our research team delved into all kinds of bureaucratic data\, concluding that annually 500 North Koreans start working in Poland under forced labour conditions. \nWith the labour the DPRK regime earns much-needed hard currency; the workers themselves only see a pitiable sum of the money they earn. Along with the labour\, the DPRK exports its repressive ideological system\, complete with compulsory ideological sessions\, worship of the Supreme Leader and harsh sanctions against rule-breakers – and their family left behind in North Korea. \nThe ‘perfect fit’ between the highly skilled\, disciplined and cheap worker from the DPRK and the insatiable and increasing demand from the international market for cheap labour has created a nightmarish reality for those trapped inside it. This after all is legal labour: the workers come certified by the DPRK state and are given EU work permits and visa. \nDPRK forced labour in the EU unexpectedly also holds opportunities for redress. The abuses take place on EU soil\, so EU laws and international treaties apply. The notion of chain liability allows assigning accountability to all parties involved\, including Pyongyang. \nThe multidisciplinary and international Slaves to the System research group based at Leiden University is committed to mapping DPRK forced labour in the EU\, preparing the way for litigation. On 6 July 2016 at Leiden University we will be releasing the final report which will be commented on by a keynote speaker and a panel\, followed by a Q&A. The meeting will be concluded with drinks.  \n \nRegistratie\n\nRegistration is required. \n \nMeer Informatie\n\nSee project website: http://www.slavestothesystem.eu/

SUMMARY:Contemporary North Korean Art: The Evolution of Socialist Realism
DESCRIPTION:An exhibition on North Korean art curated by BG Muhn\, artist and Professor at Georgetown University\, will open at the American University Museum. \nThe forms and structure of contemporary North Korean art\, a central and highly developed dimension of the national culture\, are largely unknown to the outside world. This exhibition\, the first of its kind in the U.S.\, seeks to broaden understanding of North Korean art beyond stereotypes of propaganda and kitsch to show sophisticated and nuanced expressive achievements. It investigates previously unrevealed evidence of North Korean artistic experimentation and the evolution of Socialist Realism within this culturally homogeneous context. The works in the exhibition focus on the development of Chosonhwa\, North Korea’s predominant painting medium that is revered as the nation’s most refined.
